Yang's Mansion in Shekou of Qingshui, Historical residence in Qingshui District, Taiwan.
Yang's Mansion in Shekou of Qingshui is a traditional courtyard residence in Qingshui, Taiwan, built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It consists of three connected courtyard sections with hand-carved wooden details and spacious interior rooms typical of that era in Taiwan.
The Yang family originally came from Fujian Province in China and settled in the Qingshui area during the 19th century, eventually building this residence as their base. The structure was later modified during the Japanese colonial period, which left a visible mark on parts of the building.
The Yang family was one of the most influential in the region, and the layout of the residence still reflects that social standing today. Rooms were clearly set aside for guests, family members, or community matters, and walking through them gives a sense of how status shaped everyday space.
Visits must be booked in advance online, as access is generally offered on selected Saturdays each month and spots fill up quickly. Guided tours are available on site and are the best way to understand the layout and meaning of each section.
A southern wing called Lanshi was added in the 1920s and reflects Japanese architectural influence more clearly than the rest of the building. The northern section was demolished in 2010, so what visitors see today is only part of what the original residence once looked like.
