Lin Family Mansion, Shekou

Lin Family Mansion in Shengang is a large residential complex organized around multiple courtyards connected by pathways and traditional gardens. The building contains numerous rooms and pavilions, including a moon-viewing pavilion, arranged to reflect the layout of a wealthy household from earlier centuries.

The mansion was established during the Qing Dynasty when the Lin family became influential leaders among immigrants from Zhangzhou. The structure later bore traces of the 1895 Japanese occupation, which altered both its use and history.

The mansion reveals how the Lin family displayed their prosperity and cultural ties through architectural choices, particularly in named spaces like the Dingjingtang banquet hall. Walking through the rooms, you can see how these decisions reflected their status within the community.

Visitors can best explore the estate with guided tours that explain the different areas and their purposes. The grounds are accessible on foot, with pathways between courtyards and gardens that are straightforward to walk through.

During the 1895 Japanese occupation, the estate was repurposed as temporary shelter for soldiers from mainland China. This unexpected wartime use added another layer to the building's history beyond its original role as a family home.
