Houli Bikeway Bridge, Railway bridge conversion in Houli District, Taichung, Taiwan.
The Houli Bikeway Bridge is a steel truss bridge over the Dajia River in the Houli district of Taichung, Taiwan, linking cycling paths on both riverbanks. Its exposed metal framework gives it an open, industrial look that contrasts with the river and surrounding greenery.
The bridge was built in 1908 during the Japanese colonial period and originally carried trains across the Dajia River. After rail service ended, it was converted into a public cycling path open to all.
The bridge is part of a cycling route that locals use daily to move through the outskirts of Taichung. On weekends, families with children and older riders gather along the path, giving the crossing a relaxed, everyday character.
The bridge is accessible on foot or by bike and can be crossed in either direction without restrictions. Going in the early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable, as the sun over the open river deck can be strong during midday.
On the Taichung side, the bridge connects directly to Tunnel No. 9, an abandoned railway tunnel roughly 1,270 meters long that cyclists can now ride through. The combination of a river crossing and a tunnel passage on the same route is rare in Taiwan.
