1993年新天輪發電廠爆炸事故, Industrial accident site in Taichung, Taiwan
The New Tianlung Power Plant explosion severely damaged transformers and control rooms of the facility in Taichung. The blast destroyed equipment and infrastructure across multiple sections of the complex.
On October 28, 1993, at 4:03 PM, a catastrophic explosion killed 6 people and injured 26 workers at the power plant. The accident became one of the most serious industrial disasters of that era in Taiwan.
The accident raised awareness about industrial safety across Taiwan and became a turning point for how factories and power facilities approach worker protection.
The site is no longer operational and sits in an industrial area of Taichung that is typically not open to the public. Historical information about the incident can be found in city archives and local documentation.
Four engineers, including three Japanese nationals, were convicted and imprisoned for professional negligence in the accident. This case was unusual for highlighting international accountability in industrial disasters.
