Karakuli

Karakuli is a mountaintop fortress near Yalta that sits on a steep rocky ridge overlooking the Black Sea coast. The ruins display sections of original walls and defensive structures that were reinforced and rebuilt during different historical periods.

The fortress likely arose in medieval times as a defensive outpost against pirates and rival powers competing for control of coastal regions. It was rebuilt and modified multiple times, reflecting its enduring importance as a strategic stronghold across several centuries.

The stones of the walls display carefully chiseled markings and joints that show the craftsmanship of builders working without modern tools. These carvings still help visitors today to distinguish between the different construction phases of the structure.
