Muskegon County, Administrative county in Michigan, United States.

Muskegon County is an administrative county in northern Michigan located along Lake Michigan's shoreline. The area encompasses several cities, towns, and rural communities connected by rivers and lakes.

The county was established in 1859 and developed into an important center for lumber processing and fishing. The region played a key role in Michigan's economic growth during the 1800s through these industries.

The name comes from the Ojibwa word "mashkig" meaning marsh, reflecting the wetland character of the landscape. People in the region connect their identity closely to the waterfront and local heritage.

Visitors can use local transit services to move between different towns and communities within the area. Having a car is helpful for exploring the more remote areas and accessing waterfront locations.

A deep-water port on Lake Michigan allows large cargo ships to operate in the region. This strategic advantage made the county an important shipping hub for Great Lakes commerce.
