Blue Ridge Mountains, Mountain range in North Carolina, United States

The Blue Ridge Mountains stretch more than 880 kilometers through eight states, from Pennsylvania to Georgia, with granite and limestone formations rising above 2000 meters. The slopes are densely covered with hardwood forest, while open meadows and rock outcrops at higher elevations offer views over the rolling peaks.

Indigenous peoples, including the Siouan Manahoacs, Iroquois, and Shawnee, lived at the base of this range until European settlers arrived in the 1730s. The mountains later became home to subsistence farmers and loggers whose isolated way of life shaped the culture of the region for centuries.

The communities within this range maintain a living tradition of handcrafted objects, especially quilts, woven baskets, and wooden musical instruments. On weekends, local musicians still gather on porches or at community gatherings to play the old melodies passed down through generations.

The Blue Ridge Parkway offers more than 750 kilometers of road access through this range, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Fog can reduce visibility significantly, especially early in the morning and during autumn, when temperatures at elevation may be noticeably cooler.

Trees along this range release isoprene into the atmosphere, creating a natural phenomenon that produces the characteristic blue color visible from a distance. This chemical reaction occurs especially on hot summer days when the forests are under intense sunlight.
