Colter's Hell, Thermal springs near Cody, Wyoming, US
The thermal area spans one square mile along the Shoshone River, featuring hot springs, steam vents, and sulfurous gases releasing into the water.
John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, discovered these thermal springs during his winter exploration of 1807-1808.
The thermal waters held spiritual importance for Indigenous peoples, who created stone circles and petroglyphs near the springs.
The site is located west of Cody, accessible from West Yellowstone Avenue, with several extinct geyser cones reaching 30 feet in height.
The thermal activity has decreased over time, with many springs now submerged beneath the Buffalo Bill Dam reservoir.
