Butterfly House, Missouri Botanical Garden, Butterfly house and zoo in Faust Park, St. Louis County, US
The Butterfly House in the Missouri Botanical Garden is a large conservatory where about 60 butterfly species fly freely among more than 100 tropical plants. The space recreates a tropical climate that mimics the natural habitat of these insects and allows visitors to watch them up close.
The facility was founded in 1998 and joined the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2001. This connection made it an established educational center for butterfly conservation and natural science.
The facility received its name from Sophia M. Sachs, whose family contributed to the development of modern Chesterfield through Sachs Electric Co.
Visiting is most pleasant during warmer months when butterflies are more active and easier to see. Comfortable shoes are helpful since you will walk through the greenhouse and the surrounding gardens.
The facility was among the first insect institutions worldwide to receive recognition from a major zoo and aquarium organization. This honor confirmed its high standards for animal care and education.
