The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is a theater building in the Theater District of Manhattan with a Moorish-Byzantine facade of red brick, stone columns, and an octagonal ceiling vault with a multicolored dome. The auditorium holds 1424 seats and preserves its historic interior with wide tiers and ornamental details.
As the Martin Beck Theatre, the building opened on November 11, 1924, under the direction of architect G. Albert Lansburgh. The renaming took place in 2003 to honor artist Al Hirschfeld.
The name honors Al Hirschfeld, whose drawings captured Broadway performers for decades. His work shaped the public image of American theater and made him a fixture in the cultural scene.
