Description

The 47th Street Theatre is located at 304 West 47th Street in Manhattan within a repurposed firehouse, accommodating approximately 196 spectators in its compact interior. The space retains the building's original structure while functioning as a performance venue for contemporary theater.

History

This structure was designed by architect Napoleon LeBrun and opened in 1888 as Fire Engine Company No. 54 for the New York City Fire Department. The building later transitioned to theatrical use and received landmark status in 2008.

Culture

The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater has called this space home since the early 1970s, bringing Latin American stories and voices to New York audiences. The venue reflects the neighborhood's commitment to supporting diverse artistic expressions and community-focused performance.

Practical

The theater sits between Eighth and Ninth Avenues with easy access to subway lines C and E at 50th Street station nearby. The central location makes it straightforward to reach and puts you close to nearby dining and entertainment options.
