Appleton Building, Historic commercial building in NoHo, Manhattan, US

The Appleton Building at 1-5 Bond Street is a four-story structure with an ornate cast iron facade and mansard roof in Second Empire architectural style. The building combines detailed cast iron and stone work that showcases the craftsmanship and manufacturing capabilities of late 19th century New York.

The structure was constructed between 1879 and 1880 and initially manufactured watch cases. It later housed D. Appleton & Company, a major publishing firm that made the building its home and established its presence in the NoHo area.

The building earned recognition as a New York City landmark in 1979 and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. These designations reflect its importance to the architectural and commercial history of the NoHo neighborhood.

The building sits between Broadway and Lafayette Street, making it easy to locate from different approaches. A conversion from commercial to residential spaces occurred in 1986, meaning it now functions as a residential building and public access may be limited to viewing the exterior.

The building was initially known as the Robbins & Appleton Building before becoming associated primarily with the publisher that established its headquarters there. This shift in naming reflects how the publishing company shaped the building's identity and significance in the neighborhood.
