The Battery Tower site sits at the corner of West Street and Battery Place near Manhattan's southern tip. The original design called for 43 stories, with six levels for retail and offices and 35 residential floors overlooking the Hudson River.
The project started in 1929 as a 50 million dollar residential undertaking but halted during excavation work. Workers discovered buried harbor structures and sunken docks that blocked construction.
This spot represents an era when New York pursued ambitious building projects, especially during the economic boom of the late 1920s. Such undertakings shaped the city's character and remind visitors of the energy of that time.
The site sits at an easy-to-reach corner in southern Manhattan where visitors can walk around the area without difficulty. The location is publicly accessible, though it offers limited shelter from bad weather.
The exterior design specified brickwork in four shades of buff and two shades of red arranged vertically to create distinct patterns. This color combination was never realized since construction stopped early.
