Black Mountain of Maine, Ski resort in Rumford, United States
Black Mountain of Maine is a ski resort near Rumford, in western Maine, offering both downhill slopes and Nordic cross-country trails. Equipment rental and ski instruction are available on site, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors.
The site was founded in 1924 by the Chisholm Ski Club, which started by building ski jumps and cross-country routes in the hills around Rumford. Over the following decades it grew into a full downhill ski resort serving the surrounding region.
In 1950, when Lake Placid ran out of snow, the Nordic World Ski Championships moved here, and local families opened their homes to host the competitors. That moment left a strong connection between the mountain and the surrounding community that visitors can still feel today.
The resort is open several days a week, and arriving early on weekends helps avoid waiting at the lifts. Dressing in layers is a good idea, as temperatures on the slopes can drop quickly throughout the day.
The entire mountain can be booked for a private event, giving a group exclusive access to all trails and facilities for the day. This makes it one of the few ski areas in New England where a wedding or company gathering can take over the whole place.
