Bookmill, Used bookstore in former mill at Montague, United States
The Bookmill is a used bookstore housing over 40,000 titles across multiple rooms within a restored 19th-century mill building overlooking the Sawmill River. The structure maintains its original industrial design with expansive windows offering river views and flooding interior spaces with daylight.
The building was constructed in 1834 as a grain mill and ground grain until the 1930s. It was subsequently converted to manufacture hydraulic marking machines before eventually becoming the bookstore it is today.
The space functions as a gathering place for art lovers and music enthusiasts, hosting exhibitions of local works and performances through its integrated gallery and music shop. People come here to connect with creative community rather than simply browsing books.
The complex features two dining options on site: the Alvah Stone restaurant and the Lady Killigrew café serving coffee and light refreshments. Visitors can browse the various rooms and enjoy meals without leaving the property.
The building was originally known as the Alvah Stone Mill, a name now carried forward by the restaurant operating within the complex today. This connection to its historical past remains visible through the businesses operating there, linking visitors to the site's heritage.
