Consolidated Gold Mine

The Consolidated Gold Mine is a gold mine in Dahlonega featuring a network of underground tunnels extending more than 200 feet below the surface. The passages display original machinery and equipment that miners used during the 1800s.

The operation began in 1875 when a mining company took over lands in the area after placer mining activities had declined. The new venture was built to extract gold on a larger scale than previous efforts.

The site reveals how people searched for gold in the 1800s and the methods they relied on to extract it from the earth. Visitors can observe the daily reality of underground work and the tools miners depended on.

Access is provided through guided tours that lead visitors underground to view the tunnels and historic equipment firsthand. Wearing sturdy shoes and a light jacket is advisable, as the interior stays cool and passages can be uneven.

The grounds contain one of the largest stamp mills ever built east of the Mississippi River, a piece of equipment designed to crush ore. This massive industrial machine was a technological innovation of its time that sped up the processing of extracted gold.
