Doane's Falls, Nature reserve with waterfalls in Royalston, Massachusetts.
Doane's Falls is a nature reserve where Lawrence Brook descends through granite ledges in three distinct cascades totaling about 175 feet before reaching Tully Lake. The waterfall creates multiple plunge pools and streams that flow through the wooded terrain below.
Amos Doane built a mill above the falls in the early 1800s to manufacture doors and window frames, using the water's power for production. The site later transitioned from industrial use to conservation, preserving the landscape as a natural area.
The Trustees of Reservations maintain this 46-acre site as part of their mission to preserve natural landscapes in Massachusetts.
A half-mile trail follows the west side of Lawrence Brook, providing easy access to view all three waterfall sections without any entrance fee. Walking the path during daylight hours allows visitors to move safely between each cascade and the surrounding forest.
Below the cascades, the water flows into tranquil Coddings Meadow, transforming from rushing falls into calm conditions ideal for canoeing. This shift from wild whitewater to still waters happens within a short distance, creating two distinct water experiences in one visit.
