Royalston Falls, Natural cascade in Royalston, Massachusetts, United States.
Royalston Falls is a waterfall that plunges 45 feet straight down into a circular gorge carved by Falls Brook. The water continuously flows through granite rock formations, creating a strong vertical drop that has shaped the basin over time.
The waterfall was known as Forbes Falls during the 1800s, taking its name from a local connection from that era. The area became protected land in 1951 when it was incorporated into a conservation preserve.
The falls attract visitors drawn to experience the raw power of flowing water against ancient rock walls. For many, a trip here offers a chance to connect with the natural beauty that has shaped human appreciation of wild landscapes in the region.
The trail to reach the falls is a round-trip hike of about 1.3 miles starting from the parking area south of the New Hampshire border. The rocks near the water can be slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear and caution on approach are advised.
A small wooden shelter sits near the top of the gorge where visitors can spend the night at no charge on a first-come basis. This rare opportunity allows up to 12 people to experience sleeping beside a flowing waterfall.
