Great Kirs, Mountain summit in Shusha District, Azerbaijan
Great Kirs is a mountain summit in the Shusha District of southwestern Azerbaijan, part of the Lesser Caucasus range. It sits within a landscape of deep valleys and rocky slopes that set it clearly apart from the surrounding terrain.
The peak has been a known geographical reference for caravan routes and regional boundaries in the southern Caucasus for centuries. Over time it appeared in various maps and local accounts, as its position made it a natural point of orientation.
The name "Great Kirs" is a translation of local Azerbaijani and Armenian terms for the same peak, each rooted in different linguistic traditions of the region. Hikers who reach the top can look out over a mosaic of valleys and ridges that have been used as pasture and grazing land by local communities for generations.
Reaching the top requires solid footwear and basic mountain gear, as the slopes are steep and rocky in places. Late summer offers the most reliable conditions, with less snow and more stable ground underfoot.
Despite sitting at roughly 2,561 meters, the summit sees very few visitors compared to other peaks of the Lesser Caucasus, making it one of the quieter high points of the region. On clear days, several other peaks of the range are visible from the top, offering a wide view across the ridgelines.
