Founded in 1930 as the National Theater of Vrbaska Banovina, the current building was constructed in 1934 following blueprints inspired by Serbian theater architecture.

Located at Kralja Petra I Karađorđevića 78, the theater occupies a corner position with entrances accessible from two main streets in central Banja Luka.
Artist Dragutin Inkiostri created distinctive relief decorations that combine traditional folklore elements with the building's Bauhaus and neoclassical architectural style.
