Hondarribia

This northern Spanish municipality sits at the mouth of the Bidasoa River, creating a natural border with France near the Bay of Txingudi.

King Alfonso VIII of Castile granted the town charter to Hondarribia on April 18, 1203, establishing its status as a strategic settlement.

The annual Alarde celebration in September features hundreds of participants marching through streets in traditional military uniforms with muskets and drums.

The town maintains both Spanish and Basque as official languages, with street signs, administrative documents, and public communications presented in both languages.

The medieval fortress walls remain intact around the old quarter, incorporating watchtowers and gates from the 16th and 17th centuries.
