Ḷḷuarca

Ḷḷuarca is a fishing port town on the Asturian coast, stretching around an S-shaped harbor with white houses cascading down the cliffs. Seven bridges cross the Negro River, connecting different sections of the settlement together.

The Palace of the Marquis of Ferrera reflects the architectural development of the town from the 16th to the 19th century. This evolution shows the growing importance of the settlement as a trading port.

The traditional cider houses, known as chigres, preserve the local practice of pouring Asturian cider from a height into glasses. Visitors can still experience this distinctive drinking custom in these casual establishments today.

The town cemetery is carved into the coastal rocks and offers direct views of the sea. The tomb of Nobel laureate Severo Ochoa is located here and is accessible to visitors.

The Aula del Mar near the lighthouse functions as a marine zoology museum with an extensive collection of giant squid specimens. This remarkable assembly attracts both nature enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
