Cuerda Larga, Mountain chain in Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Spain.
Cuerda Larga is a mountain chain in the Sierra de Guadarrama that extends roughly 16 kilometers along a continuous ridge above the tree line. The highest peak, Cabezas de Hierro, reaches 2383 meters, and the entire range stays well above 2000 meters in elevation.
During the medieval period, the range formed a natural boundary between Christian kingdoms and Muslim territories on the Iberian Peninsula. This strategic ridge marked one of the major dividing lines in the region's past.
The ridgeline divides the watersheds of the Lozoya and Manzanares rivers, shaping how water flows through the valleys below. For centuries, local communities have relied on the seasonal flow from these peaks to sustain farming and livestock in the foothills.
The range is accessible from Navacerrada Pass, which you can reach by train or bus from Madrid, offering various starting points for hikes. Depending on the route you choose, walks range from a few hours for shorter explorations to a full day for longer treks.
The ridge holds ten major peaks, including Bola del Mundo and La Najarra, stretching across open landscape above the tree line. These summits offer unobstructed views of the surrounding valleys and Madrid in the distance.
