Paseo del Malecón, Baroque monument in Murcia, Spain.
The Paseo del Malecón is an elevated walkway that runs along Murcia's western side and rises about three meters above the adjacent ground. The structure connects San Francisco Square with La Arboleja district while protecting the farming areas below.
The structure was built in the 15th century as a protective wall and was later substantially repaired in 1736 by Francisco de Luján y Arce because rain and horse traffic had caused damage. These repairs were essential to preserve the structure's function.
The promenade links the city to surrounding farming areas and creates a space where people from different worlds meet. Visitors can observe how this path weaves together urban and rural life.
The path offers protection from Segura River flooding and is suitable for walking. Visitors should note that the surface can become wet during rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
During spring festivals and the Murcia Fair, the promenade transforms into a lively marketplace with food stalls and craft vendors. This annual celebration brings traditional trade and modern visitors together.
