Iglesia de Jesús, Baroque church in Murcia, Spain
Iglesia de Jesús is a Baroque church in Murcia built with an octagonal plan from which several chapels extend outward. The interior contains detailed religious sculptures and functions as a museum space housing various religious artworks and collections.
Construction began in 1670 on the site of an earlier hermitage and was completed by the end of the 17th century. The building replaced a previous religious structure and became an important center for religious art in Murcia.
The church houses wooden figures that are still carried through Murcia's streets during Holy Week processions each year. These sculptures connect the building to local traditions and remain central to how the community marks its most important religious celebrations.
The building is open to visitors year-round to view its religious art collections and the interior layout. The octagonal structure with its central space makes it straightforward to move through and explore.
The walls are decorated with paintings from 1792 created by the artist Pablo Sístori that add color to the interior. In the main chapel stands a modified processional figure from 1601 showing how the artworks have been adapted over centuries.
