Torre del Diablo

Torre del Diablo is a coastal defensive tower located near Almuñécar that shows a simple yet effective design from its construction period. The structure has clean geometric lines with a circular base and rises distinctly above the surrounding landscape, making it visible from the water.

The tower was built in the mid-18th century as a replacement for an earlier fortification that had occupied the same location. It belonged to a network of observation posts that protected the Spanish Mediterranean coast for many decades.

The tower stands as a reminder of how the coastline was once divided into defensive zones to protect the population. Local residents grew up seeing it as a landmark that marks where the territory changes from settled areas to open shore.

The tower can be accessed by car via the main coastal road, with parking areas available near the path leading to it. The walking route is flat and straightforward, making it easy to approach from nearby parking spots.

Inside the tower, four openings are carefully aligned toward each of the four cardinal directions, allowing those stationed there to monitor both approaching ships and land routes. This thoughtful design shows how much attention was paid to the practical needs of defense.
