Villa Excélsior, Art Nouveau residential building in Ḷḷuarca, Spain
Villa Excélsior is an Art Nouveau residential building with eclectic design elements located in Llorca in Asturias. A prominent tower topped with a green-tiled dome and ornate exterior decorations form the structure's most distinctive features.
The villa was commissioned in 1912 by Manuel Méndez de Andés, a tobacco merchant who made his fortune in Argentina. Architect Manuel del Busto designed it as a symbol of success for returning Spanish businessmen from South America.
The villa reflects the tastes of Spanish emigrants who returned from the Americas with wealth and built grand homes blending Old World and New World design. Their choice of eclectic styles showed how far they had traveled and the cultures they had experienced abroad.
The building sits in a quiet residential neighborhood in Llorca, making it easy to reach on foot. Its elevated location and distinctive tower make it visible from several angles throughout the area.
The villa takes its name from Excélsior, a successful cigarette brand that was produced by the original owner's tobacco factory in Buenos Aires. This naming choice directly linked the South American business enterprise to the European residence.
