Runeberg, Lönnrot, Snellman, Granite memorial at Yliopistonmäki, Finland

The monument to Runeberg, Lönnrot, and Snellman is a black granite structure featuring three life-sized figures standing on an elevated platform in front of the university's main building. The three figures stand side by side and occupy a prominent position in the area before the university entrance.

Artist Harry Kivijärvi created this work in 1968 after winning a competition announced in 1962 by the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The three depicted individuals began their studies at the former Academy of Turku in the early 19th century.

The monument honors three men whose work shaped the development of Finnish language and national identity. Their presence at this location reflects their connection to the university where they pursued their education.

The monument sits on the University of Turku campus right along the main path that many students travel daily to their lectures. Visitors can view the sculpture at any time since it stands in an open outdoor area.

The three figures are portrayed as young students with their hands in their pockets, as if lost in thought. This casual stance sets them apart from the formal poses typical of many other monuments and makes the statues feel human and approachable.
