Runeberg, Lönnrot, Snellman, Granite memorial at Yliopistonmäki, Finland
The black granite monument features three life-sized figures of Runeberg, Lönnrot, and Snellman standing on a large platform in front of the university.
Sculptor Harry Kivijärvi created this monument in 1968 after winning a design competition held by the Finnish Cultural Foundation in 1962.
The sculpture commemorates three influential figures who began their studies at the Academy of Turku in 1822 and shaped Finnish literature and nationalism.
Located in front of the University of Turku main building, the monument faces the path used daily by students walking to their classes.
The three figures are depicted as young university students with their hands in their pockets, watching over the current generation of scholars.
