Vallot Hut, Mountain refuge in Mont Blanc massif, France
Vallot Hut sits at about 4,362 meters on the upper slopes of Mont Blanc, positioned between the Dome du Gouter and the summit. The duralumin structure provides emergency shelter for about 12 people and operates without heating.
The shelter was built in 1890 and officially opened in August 1938. It represented a major development in providing mountaineering infrastructure at extreme altitude.
The shelter takes its name from Joseph Vallot, a mountain researcher who devoted himself to exploring the Alps. Visitors can feel the connection to the early days of Alpine mountaineering here.
The shelter serves purely as an emergency refuge and requires no reservations to keep it available for critical situations. Climbers should prepare for extreme weather and the challenging approach when planning to reach it.
The hut sits only about 500 meters below the summit and is the highest emergency shelter in the French Alps. This position makes it an essential place for mountaineers who encounter sudden emergencies on this challenging final stretch.
