Lac du Cinto, Glacial lake at 2289 meters in Haute-Corse, France
This glacial lake sits below Monte Cinto at approximately 2289 meters elevation and is ringed by multicolored rocks and steep mountainsides. The water reflects the surrounding slopes, forming a natural basin in the high alpine terrain.
The basin formed through glacial movement during past ice ages, carving this natural depression in the mountains. It ranks among Corsica's highest altitude lakes and reflects the island's ice-age geology.
The name comes from its location below Monte Cinto peak. Shepherds use the surrounding meadows following practices that have shaped this landscape for centuries.
Reaching the lake requires a long hike from Lozzi village, with the path marked by stone cairns through changing terrain. Sturdy footwear and weather protection are essential, as conditions shift quickly at this high elevation.
In the early summer months, patches of snow often remain near the shoreline even as valleys far below are warm. This rare mix of snow and summer sun creates distinctive lighting conditions that change throughout the day.
