Ananuri, Medieval fortress complex in Dusheti Municipality, Georgia
Ananuri is a fortified complex with two castles linked by crenellated walls and watchtowers overlooking the Aragvi River at about 900 meters elevation. The site includes a 17th-century church and several outbuildings that show how it functioned as a ducal residence.
The complex emerged as the seat of the Dukes of Aragvi starting in the 13th century and became a center of regional power. A raid in 1739 by rivals from the Ksani valley severely damaged the structure and marked the beginning of its decline.
The Church of the Mother of God reflects Georgian faith through its stone carvings and dome, with inscriptions marking the families who worshipped here. Visitors can see how religious life centered on this structure within the fortress walls.
The site sits about 72 kilometers north of Tbilisi and remains accessible year-round, with guided tours available to explain the medieval defense systems. Plan to spend a few hours exploring the fortress walls, towers, and the church within the complex.
Inside the church stands a stone canopy that a widow had built to honor her deceased husband, and it remains visible today. Several tombs of Aragvi dukes are also located in this sacred space, reflecting its special importance to the ruling family.
