Pylos, Harbor town in Messenia, Greece
Pylos is a harbor town in Navarino Bay on the Messenian coast. Buildings rise from the waterfront up the hillside, while the central square sits close to the water.
The naval battle of Navarino in October 1827 ended with the destruction of the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet by British, French and Russian ships. This defeat accelerated the path toward Greek independence.
The square beneath old plane trees remains a gathering spot for locals who drink their coffee and watch the water. White houses with red roofs give the town a Mediterranean character.
The nearest international airport is at Kalamata, about 52 kilometers away. The town is easy to explore on foot, with most points quickly reached from the main square.
The island of Sfaktiria protects the bay like a natural breakwater and creates one of the calmest anchorages in the Mediterranean. Sailors used this sheltered position as a safe harbor even in ancient times.
