Lillafüred, Mountain resort town in Bükk Mountains, Hungary
Lillafüred is a mountain settlement in the Bükk Mountains featuring a distinctive Palace Hotel set between two streams on terraced slopes. The building is surrounded by several waterfalls, including a 20-meter tall artificial waterfall.
Development of this mountain area began in the 1890s when a local noble family invested in building a resort destination. The location was named after a family member and gradually became known as a place for rest and recreation.
The Palace Hotel displays Hungarian architectural design from the interwar period through its grand rooms and decorated facade. The area has become a gathering place for visitors drawn to mountain scenery and the building's elegant design.
The easiest way to reach this mountain settlement is by the narrow-gauge forest railway from Miskolc, which runs daily through the western part of the region. Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes, as the area involves some walking and the terrain is hilly.
Beneath the Palace Hotel lies the Anna Cave, featuring rare limestone formations created by thermal water activity. This type of cave formation occurs in only a few other locations worldwide.
