National Historical Memorial Park of Ópusztaszer

The National Historical Memorial Park is an open-air museum featuring historical buildings that represent different periods of Hungarian settlement and culture. The grounds include exhibits, craft workshops, and open spaces where visitors can explore how people lived and worked.

Hungarian tribal leaders gathered here in 895 for an assembly that marked the birth of the Hungarian nation. Nearly a thousand years later, a panoramic painting was created to commemorate this founding event and preserve its memory.

This site holds deep meaning as the birthplace of the Hungarian state and is treated as a place of national remembrance. Visitors can sense how this founding moment continues to shape Hungarian identity today.

The park is easiest to explore during warmer months when all buildings and outdoor areas are fully accessible. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the grounds are large and require moving around on foot to see everything.

Inside a circular building stands a large panoramic painting from the 1890s that shows the arrival of the Hungarian tribes. This artwork draws viewers into the scene as if standing in the middle of the painted landscape, creating an immersive experience unlike typical museum paintings.
