Cork Institute of Technology, Irish tertiary educational institution
Cork Institute of Technology was a technology institute in Bishopstown covering about 80 acres with modern buildings, laboratories, and sports facilities. The campus offered students a mix of older and newer structures with open courtyards and well-equipped amenities.
The institute was established in 1974, building on older schools like the Royal Cork Institution from the early 1800s and the Crawford Municipal Technical Institute. In 2021 it merged with Institute of Technology Tralee to form Munster Technological University.
The institute was long a hub for cultural events in Cork, hosting regular festivals, music performances, and art exhibitions. Campus life offered students space to exchange ideas and explore creativity together.
The campus is accessible by public transport and has clear signage with friendly staff at entrances. Facilities include cafes, sports fields, and a large library with study and computer areas throughout.
The institute operated Blackrock Castle Observatory, a 16th-century fortress converted into an observatory with interactive exhibits and a telescope on the roof. It also supported start-up companies through the Rubicon Centre, providing office space and guidance for developing new technologies.
