Hansi, Ancient fortress city in Hisar district, India
Hansi is an old town in Hisar district, Haryana, located about 26 kilometers east of Hisar at an elevation of around 207 meters. The town retains its fortified layout with four main gates that once controlled entry to the inner settlement.
The town was founded in 957 CE by King Anangpal Tomar, who established a sword-making workshop whose weapons were exported to distant markets. Over centuries, the settlement changed hands among different rulers and absorbed influences from each period of control.
The name Hansi comes from a Sanskrit word for swan, reflecting the town's ancient connection to nature and water. Walking through its lanes today, you encounter the layered remains of different periods that shaped the place.
The town is easily accessible with multiple historic gateways like Delhi Gate and Hisar Gate serving as key orientation points for visitors. Daytime exploration works well for viewing monuments and getting oriented, while the layout is compact enough to walk through on foot.
In 1982, a major hoard was discovered here containing Jaina bronze sculptures and religious artifacts spanning from the Gupta period through the 8th century. These archaeological findings reveal that the town was an important spiritual center for multiple faiths during its peak.
