Golaghat, Administrative center in Assam, India
Golaghat is an urban center in Assam's Golaghat district, located on the banks of the Dhansiri River. The city blends traditional market streets running through its core with residential and administrative areas spreading outward.
The town grew during the 19th century when merchants from Marwar established trading posts along the river. Its name reflects this commerce-based past, with 'Gola' referring to the market and 'Ghat' to the river port where goods were exchanged.
The Golaghat Amateur Theatre Society, founded in 1895, maintains its position as one of the oldest performing arts institutions in Assam.
The town is reachable by bus from nearby cities, with local transport available for getting around. When you arrive, you will find shops and lodging options near the central market area where most activity is centered.
The district borders Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to a significant rhino population. Many visitors travel from the city outward to the park to observe these animals in their natural setting.
