Khamgaon, human settlement in India
Khamgaon is a town in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, surrounded by low hills with tree-covered spaces. The streets are lined with shops, homes, and small factories, where old buildings from the past stand alongside newer structures and active markets.
Khamgaon arose nearly 200 years ago as a small market where traders exchanged cotton, ghee, and threads, often connected to nomadic Pendharis communities. By the 1800s it had grown into India's largest cotton market, though it later declined from this position.
The name Khamgaon reflects its past as a trading hub where people exchanged cotton, ghee, and threads. Today the town is known as the Silver City because of its famous markets for silver and gold products, where craftspeople work daily selling their wares to visitors and locals alike.
The best time to visit is during winter when temperatures are mild and pleasant, as summers can be extremely hot. The town is well connected by railway and National Highway 6, with regular bus services linking it to nearby settlements.
The town produces silver tubes used in India's Chandrayaan space missions, showing how local factories contribute to national progress. The famous actor Amitabh Bachchan once ordered a silver Ganesh statue from here.
