Prayagraj Airport, Domestic airport and air base in Prayagraj, India
Prayagraj Airport is a dual-use facility in the city of Prayagraj, serving both civilian passengers and military operations in Uttar Pradesh. The terminal handles domestic routes to major Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad, with flights operated by several national carriers.
Civil aviation began here in the early 20th century with a mail route connecting the city to nearby Naini, eventually leading to the formal opening of the air facility. Construction took place in several phases, starting in the 1920s and continuing until the base was officially established in the 1930s.
The terminal building spans 6,700 square meters and accommodates increased passenger traffic during major religious gatherings like the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage.
The terminal features a landing system that helps with operations during low visibility and nighttime approaches. The facility sits outside the city center and is accessible via the main roads leading into Prayagraj.
The recent extension was completed in less than a year by a private construction company and includes facilities for sewage treatment and rainwater collection. This approach aims to reduce water consumption and lower environmental impact in a region with heavy seasonal rainfall.
