Abdul Kalam Island, Military test facility island in Odisha, India.
Abdul Kalam Island is a military facility off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal, used for ballistic testing. The site contains several launch pads, observation towers, radar stations, and administrative buildings spread along the sandy shoreline and inland areas.
The island was selected for missile testing in the 1970s and later renamed after the former Indian president who was known as an aerospace engineer. The site evolved from a largely unused coastal island to a center for defense research over several decades.
The Defense Research and Development Organisation established multiple scientific facilities, making it central to India's technological advancement.
Access to the island is restricted to military personnel with clearance, and visits are typically granted only to government employees and authorized researchers. Civilians cannot enter or view the area from nearby coastal points, as the site remains under constant surveillance.
The island remains closed for several days during most launch tests, and nearby fishing villages receive regular updates about exclusion zones. Local fishermen know the times when the area becomes inaccessible and plan their routes accordingly.
