Integral Coach Factory, Train coach manufacturing facility in Perambur, Chennai, India
Integral Coach Factory is a railway coach production facility in Perambur, a neighborhood in northern Chennai, that manufactures different types of passenger cars. The complex spreads across several workshop buildings where chassis are assembled, exterior panels fitted, and interior fittings installed.
The facility opened in 1955 when India began manufacturing railway coaches domestically rather than importing them from abroad. Over the following decades, the plant expanded its capacity and developed new construction methods for different types of train cars.
This production site supplies coaches for millions of passengers each year, ranging from basic seating areas to air-conditioned sleeper compartments. The manufacturing halls show a mix of manual craftsmanship and industrial automation, where welders, fitters, and electricians work side by side on each unit.
Visitors can enter the facility only during special open house days when organized tours through selected production areas are offered. Those planning to join a tour should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for machine noise in the workshop halls.
The facility produces thousands of coaches each year using an assembly line system that handles multiple production stages at the same time. Some of the trains built here later cross the entire country, covering routes of several thousand kilometers.
