Tomb of Salim Chishti, Marble mausoleum in Fatehpur Sikri, India.
The Tomb of Salim Chishti is a white marble structure in Fatehpur Sikri featuring geometric patterns on its base, intricate wall carvings, and a central dome crowning the main chamber. It sits on a raised platform accessed by five steps and faces south toward the Buland Darwaja gate.
Emperor Akbar built this monument between 1580 and 1581 in honor of a Sufi saint who was believed to have foretold the birth of the imperial heir. The construction reflected the spiritual influence this revered teacher held at court.
This shrine draws visitors who tie black threads to the marble screens as a way to honor the spiritual master and express their personal hopes.
You can enter from the south side where five steps lead up to the platform. The interior passages are narrow, so move carefully and allow time to see the intricate details.
The inner sanctuary houses an ebony enclosure inlaid with mother-of-pearl that surrounds the central marble cenotaph. Many visitors miss this fine detail despite how skillfully it has been crafted.
