Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, gurukul commonly known as educational institution , central university
Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya is a state-funded university in Haridwar that combines Indian philosophy with modern subjects. The campus near the Ganges features traditional stone buildings alongside newer structures, housing classrooms, labs, and facilities where students pursue courses in sciences, engineering, medicine, and humanities.
The university was founded in 1902 by Swami Shraddhananda to revive the ancient Indian Gurukula learning system in modern times. It emerged as a response to British colonial education and has maintained its focus on Indian philosophy and values throughout its more than 100 years of operation.
The campus grounds show how Indian traditions remain part of everyday life for students and staff. During festivals and cultural events, you see traditional music, dance, and rituals practiced openly, reflecting the institution's commitment to keeping these practices alive.
The campus sits peacefully on green grounds about 6 kilometers from Haridwar town, with open spaces for walking and shaded areas under trees throughout. Visitors can freely explore on foot during daytime hours when the campus is active with students and classes.
The institution established a separate girls campus in Dehradun in 1922 and opened a women's campus in Haridwar in 1993, showing a long commitment to female education. This emphasis on women's learning was ahead of its time and continues to shape its approach today.
