Gangapur Dam, Earthfill dam in Nashik district, India
Gangapur Dam is an earthfill structure across the Godavari River in Maharashtra spanning roughly 3,900 meters and rising about 37 meters. It creates a large water body that supplies irrigation and power to the surrounding agricultural areas.
The dam was built by Maharashtra state government in the 1960s and completed in 1965 to manage water for farming and power generation. Later, sections of the right canal were closed due to urban growth, prompting the construction of Kashypi Dam upstream in 2000.
The dam reservoir supports local fishing communities while providing essential irrigation resources to agricultural lands in the surrounding Maharashtra region.
The best time to visit is in early morning when the light falls softly on the water and crowds are smaller. Most visitors reach the site by local bus or taxi from Nashik city, where accommodation and meals are readily available.
The right canal section of the dam closed due to urban development, leading to the construction of Kashypi Dam upstream in 2000.
