Gangavaram Port, Deep-water port in Visakhapatnam, India
Gangavaram Port is a deep-water facility on the eastern coast with nine berths designed to handle large cargo vessels. The infrastructure includes mechanized systems for processing coal, iron ore, bauxite, fertilizer, limestone, sugar, alumina, and steel.
Commercial operations began in 2008, followed by an official inauguration ceremony the following year. The facility was completed after approximately three years of construction, representing a major addition to regional port capacity.
The port takes its name from the nearby village of Gangavaram, which was historically centered on fishing traditions. This connection to local roots remains visible in how the area is still known by its original name despite industrial growth.
The facility operates in waters about 21 meters deep, allowing large vessels to navigate without special restrictions. Visitors should note this is an active port facility, so access to operational areas may be limited for safety reasons.
The facility serves as a distribution hub connecting eight states across eastern, western, southern, and central India. This role as a central trading point means goods flow through here for regions far beyond the immediate area.
