Mukkam, town in Kozhikkode District, Kerala, India
Mukkam is a town in Kozhikode district, Kerala, situated along the Iruvanjippuzha River to the east of Kozhikode city. State Highway 34 runs through it, linking the town to neighboring areas, and the streets are lined with market stalls, small shops, and houses interspersed with trees and nearby farmland.
Mukkam developed as a trading post under the Zamorins of Kozhikode, where farmers and merchants exchanged spices, rice, and coconut. In the 20th century, settlers cleared the surrounding forests to establish farms, and after Kerala was formed in 1956, the town gained its own local administration through the grama panchayat system.
Mukkam is home to Muslim, Hindu, and Christian communities whose places of worship stand close to one another along the main streets. During festivals like Onam or Eid, neighbors from different backgrounds tend to share food and join each other's celebrations, which gives the town a notably mixed social life.
The town sits on State Highway 34, with regular bus services connecting it to Kozhikode and nearby towns throughout the day. During the monsoon season, roughly from June to September, low-lying areas near the river can flood, so it is worth checking conditions before you visit.
The 2015 film Ennu Ninte Moideen is based on a true love story that unfolded in the area during the 1960s, and many locals can still point out the places connected to it. The writer S. K. Pottekkatt captured everyday life in and around this area in his 1941 novel Naadan Premam, well before the town took the shape it has today.
