May Day Park, Urban park in Chintadripet, India
May Day Park is a recreational grounds in Chintadripet spanning about 15 acres, divided into eastern and western sections that serve different functions. The space features dedicated areas for cricket, football, volleyball, and badminton, along with open grounds suitable for public gatherings and community events.
The grounds began as Burghall's Stables around 1849 before being transformed into Napier Park in 1869, named after the Governor of Madras Presidency. The site later became associated with the labor movement when a major rally was held there in 1923.
The park takes its name from India's first labor movement celebration held here in 1923, which drew local workers and activists to the grounds. Visitors can observe the monument within the park that displays symbolic imagery connected to worker solidarity.
The park sits directly across from Chintadripet MRTS station, making it easy to reach by public transit and accessible on foot from the area. The division into two sections helps visitors navigate different activities, whether seeking specific sports facilities or quieter open spaces.
A monument within the grounds displays the word 'May' alongside gears and a gun, creating an unusual visual representation of labor struggles. Few other sites in the region preserve such a direct physical symbol from that early period of worker activism.
