Triumph of Labour, Bronze monument at Marina Beach, Chennai, India
Triumph of Labour is a bronze statue at Marina Beach in Chennai that depicts four men moving a large stone together. The composition shows the physical power and determination of workers carrying and sharing heavy loads.
Artist Debi Prasad Roy Choudhury created the statue in 1959 during a period of urban development under the Kamaraj administration. The work emerged when India was shaping its identity after independence and workers' issues were gaining importance.
The monument stands near where India's first May Day gatherings took place, reflecting the rise of labor movements in the nation. It shows how workers and their strength became part of India's modern identity.
The monument sits at the northern end of Marina Beach across from the University of Madras. It is easily accessible and located along a popular beach where visitors can explore other sites nearby along the shore.
Night watchman A.P. Srinivasan, who worked for the sculptor, became one of the models for the statue. His presence on site meant he helped shape this lasting symbol of working power.
