Ram Bagh

Ram Bagh, Mughal garden in Agra, India

Ram Bagh is a formal garden in Agra organized across multiple levels with water channels, fountains, and flower beds arranged in geometric patterns descending toward the Jumna River. The layout features pavilions and underground chambers designed for rest and coolness during hot months.

Emperor Babur, the first Mughal ruler, founded this garden in 1526 as the first Mughal garden in India. The Marathas renamed it during their rule, and that name has remained ever since.

The garden follows Persian traditions with water channels and fountains positioned to cool the space and create gathering spots. You can see how every element, from the pathways to the pools, is arranged to shape how people move through and enjoy the space.

Visitors can walk the pathways, view the pavilions, and explore the underground chambers that once provided cooling relief. Early morning or late afternoon visits are more comfortable due to the heat.

The garden's layout follows an older Mughal tradition of symmetry that influenced all later gardens in the region, yet many visitors focus only on the water features. The underground cooling system is far simpler than those found in later imperial gardens, revealing how this design evolved over time.
