Nileshwaram, human settlement in India
Nileshwaram is a town in Kasaragod district of Kerala with narrow streets, traditional houses, and active local markets where residents shop and gather daily. Located near the Kavvayi Backwaters and the Neeleshwaram River, it is surrounded by green fields and water bodies that shape the daily life of farmers and villagers.
Nileshwaram was once the seat of the Neeleshwaram Rajahs, local rulers from the Kolathiri and Zamorin clans, and experienced historic battles between these Rajahs and the Bednore Nayaks. The town gained educational importance in 1918 when Rajah's High School opened as one of North Kerala's first schools, receiving a letter from Mahatma Gandhi in 1928 encouraging students to support independence.
Nileshwaram is known as the cultural capital of Kasaragod district, with temples like Thaliyil Siva Temple and Mannam Purath Kaavu serving as centers for community gatherings and worship. Theyyam, a ritualized dance form with colorful costumes and masks, is performed during temple festivals and shapes the town's everyday traditions.
Nileshwaram is easily accessible with a railway station in town and regular buses to major cities, while the nearest airports are in Mangalore and Kannur. The flat, quiet streets make it simple for visitors to walk around and explore the markets, temples, and waterside areas at a relaxed pace.
Nileshwaram is famous for cultivating a special local coconut variety called Chengthengu with reddish coloring, which holds economic and cultural importance in the region. These smaller, colored nuts reflect the agricultural heritage and everyday livelihoods of the town's farming community.
